Alexandrite is probably one of the rarest and mysterious gemstones on the jewelry market. This rare gemstone was first discovered in 1834 in the Ural Mountains in Russia and named after the Russian tsar Alexander II. Alexandrite has captivated the gemstone community because of its beautiful ability to change its color from green to red. Is green by daylight and red by incandescent light. Today is mined primarily in Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, Brazil, Burma, Madagascar and Tanzania. It is a rare and very expensive gemstone (up to $100K/ct for 1ct+ stones), symbolic of good fortune.
